Is David Peterson Turning the Corner?
Only Time Will Tell But it Would be Huge for the Mets Playoff Chances
Has David Peterson learned how to pitch? Was the hip injury that sidelined him for the first two months of the season holding him back? The answer to those questions might be yes after he delivered six shutout innings yesterday afternoon to improve to 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA.
Since his call-up during the 2020 pandemic season, Peterson has been maddening to watch. Inconsistency and injuries have overshadowed some of the solid runs of pitching in between. A perfect example was how he helped hold the fort down during Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom’s absence in 2022, only to implode in September with a non-competitive start against the Cubs during that team’s failed attempt to hold off the Braves for the division. Is he teasing the Mets similarly with his solid start to 2024? Time will tell, but the signs are mixed.
