There isn’t another Pete Alonso to take over first base currently on the Mets 40-man roster. No, this isn’t another trip down memory lane; lord knows we have done enough of that throughout the first two-plus months of the season. As the team wraps up its series in Seattle and prepares for the final West Coast destination, the season has settled into the heart of the schedule. Mark Vientos is at the point of “he is who he is,” which is someone who doesn’t elicit excitement or confidence when he strides to the plate. Outside of the occasional home run, Vientos profiles statistically as one of the least valuable players in the sport. So is first base destined to be a black hole until the next big free agent signing emerges? Or is there a dark horse candidate right under everyone’s nose?
