The new MLB rules prohibit post-trade deadline waiver moves. Why Talkin’ Mets believes this to be a bad idea that needs tweaking is a conversation for another day.

Signing free agents is still allowed, but players are eligible for the postseason only until August 30th. After that date, teams cannot add someone from outside their organization and have them available for the playoffs.

The Cubs Surprise Move

Earlier this week, the Cubs released Hector Neris. This was a surprise as Neris was one of the more sought-after bullpen arms this past offseason and might have fetched the Cubbies something of value at the trade deadline despite his subpar showing this year.

Why the odd decision? Neris appears to have a vesting option based on utilization that would have guaranteed his $9-million salary for 2025. Cubs brass did not think he was worth that kind of investment.

Since Neris cleared waivers, whatever team he signs with will be on the hook for just the pro-rated amount of the league minimum. Reports indicate his player option is now null and void after clearing waivers.

Last week, the Mets bullpen numbers game was discussed here. Since then, Sean Reid-Foley has continued to have issues with his injured shoulder, which has delayed his return to the big league roster. Dedniel Nunez is completing a rehab assignment and should be available to the team starting Thursday night when they open their last West Coast trip of the season in San Diego.

Talkin’ Mets continues to advocate for Danny Young to be sent to Syracuse for Nunez and for Adam Ottavino to be kept around for the rest of the season. With rosters expanding on September 1st, there will be an opening for another arm.
